This is our 10th Marathon, and although we have raised nearly $350,000 in the past 8 years, we still believe we can do more to support the miracles at Riley! We have nearly 200 students helping organize our marathon, and we are led by our group of 16 seniors who meet throughout the year to plan events to fundraise for Riley and coordinate the day of the Marathon! From 6 pm – midnight on April 11th, we hope to have 1,200 students from South and other area high schools commit to stand for those who can’t. We will dance, play games, listen to music, eat some great food, but most importantly, we will spend time with our Riley families and share their stories.Since our humble beginning, we have had so many high-achieving fundraisers that we wanted to recognize them somehow. In 2014, we added Miracle Maker hours for dancers who raise $250 or more. From 2-5 pm on April 11th, Miracle Makers get to spend more time getting to know the Riley kids, siblings, and families while doing special activities with the kids. We know that requests for donations never seem to end, but we hope you will share our passion for the miracles that happen at Riley every day and support Bloomington South’s Dance Marathon . . . It’s For the Kids!
Good Earth is a locally owned and operated compost and mulch manufacturing facility. We have been proudly serving the public for 30 years. It is our goal to protect the landfill from unnecessary dumping of yard waste. Our business recycles these materials into a product that can be used to beautify the earth rather than hurt it. We make hardwood bark mulch to be used in yards around plants. This will make your yard more beautiful as well as improve the soil, hold moisture in, and retard weed growth. Our compost is made from grass clippings and leaves, to be used as and additive to your soil. Composting will promote growth and is made of organic matter for the earth conscious gardener. Good Earth provides a garden blend that we make with our own special recipe as a potting soil. We also carry wood chips, sawdust, sand, and topsoil. Delivery is available six days a week for these products. Visit our new rustic style office with fabulous gardens to greet you.
The major focus of teaching and learning at BNTHS will be Project-Based Learning (PBL). Project-based learning brings together intellectual inquiry, rigorous real-world standards and student engagement in relevant and meaningful work. Many schools offer project-based learning experience for their students, but BNTHS is unique because students are thoroughly immersed in it.
When I started my business 18 years ago, I knew there were other chileheads across the US. What a pleasure it has been to discover so many of you share my passion. I prefer not to grow hybrids and favor the superior taste of open-pollinated varieties. Keeping heirloom seeds alive and viable is the key to preserving our biogenetic diversity. The flooding that wiped out my 1998 crop really drove home the point of how fragile an individual seed bank can be. Large commercial agricultural companies focus more and more on hybrids that reduce the varieties the home gardener can try, especially if they wish to try their hand at seed saving. With the controversy surrounding patented and bioengineered seed, I am more than ever committed to preserving and sharing chile seeds. Even though I have bred some of my own varieties, I would never dream of patenting them. Chiles are meant to be shared. Although I do not sell seeds, I am always willing to trade. If you are looking for a type of pepper or are fondly remembering a chile from a past family garden, please let me know. I will do my best to track it down and make it available to chile lovers everywhere. My plants always have been and always will be grown naturally, without any chemicals or pesticides. No federal certification labelling program will change the way that I farm. We have a term in Indiana to describe agricultural products that are produced naturally and sustainably: Hoosierganic. When you see our Hoosierganic logo, you know you are purchasing a product that has been produced with methods to protect our environment and for future generations as well.Products available at the Bloomington Community Farmers Market, and our greenhouse at 1704 Weimer Road.
