About Hartzells Ice Cream
Hartzell's Ice Cream is an independently owned shop at 107 N Dunn Street, across from Indiana University's Sample Gates. It opened on Sept. 22, 2009, and its owners are Hartzell and Hilary Martel.
Owner Hartzell Martel makes handcrafted, small-batch ice cream with a taste for the unusual. Flavors have ranged from Italian Caffe Corretto and Japanese Cherry Wasabi to Indiana Apple Butter Rummy Pecan. Ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible. The signature Garden of Good and Evil flavor uses local lavender and vodka from Bloomington's Cardinal Spirits.
Beyond scooped ice cream, the menu lists soft serve, frozen yogurt, Carbolite, sundaes, parfaits, smoothies, shakes, floats and affogatos. Vegan ice cream is available, and there is a soft serve Pup Cup that comes with a dog treat. School groups are frequently welcomed for a lesson on how the ice cream is made.
The shop's website lists daily hours running until 11 pm, though they may change, so check before you go.
