About The Chocolate Moose

The Chocolate Moose is an ice cream shop and café at 405 S Walnut St in Bloomington. Its roots go back to 1933, when Cletus May opened a café on the site. Its operations director told WRTV that a small stand called the Penguin was built in the parking lot in 1955 and later became the Chocolate Moose.

Around 2017 the land was sold to a developer, and the shop kept a retail location on the first floor of the new building. The shop still makes its ice cream in the same machine, and WRTV describes it as locally made.

There is a line of vegan ice cream sold in its stores and local grocery stores, and coffee service was expanded to keep winters busy. It opened satellite locations near IU's campus and in Nashville, Indiana. It also started Food Truck Friday, a weekly summer event.

The shop's site lists daily hours of 11 am to 11 pm in Bloomington, which may change.
