About Uptown Cafe

The Uptown Cafe is a Kirkwood Avenue restaurant that chef Michael Cassady opened in 1976 as a 30-seat cafe. In 1984 it moved to the Allen Building at 102 E. Kirkwood. At that move it added dinner and began cooking Cajun entrees. A 50-seat bar area followed in 2012.

The restaurant calls its style American Casual fine dining, guided by a love of Cajun flavors. It pairs its food with cocktails and a sommelier-crafted wine list. The dining room features paintings by Wayne Manns.

The Uptown publishes breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch menus along with a bar menu and wine list. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and hours can change. A Back Room is available for events such as rehearsal dinners, meetings and birthdays.

Bloom Magazine reported in 2021 that Michael Cassady's son Galen would eventually take over ownership. A February 2026 WFIU report quotes Galen Cassady as co-owner.
