Volunteer-run nonprofit movie theater building a permanent home at 615 N Fairview, next to Friendly Beasts.

About Cicada Cinema

Cicada Cinema is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit movie theater in Bloomington. Its mission is to provide high-quality screenings of underrepresented cinema: the old, the new, and the locally created.

The group began in 2016 and spent nearly ten years as a pop-up, showing films at venues around town including the Orbit Room, the Back Door, Hopscotch Coffee and the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts, with dozens of free screenings along the way.

It is now building a permanent movie house on the near west side, right off the B-Line Trail at 615 N Fairview Street, Suite 1, next door to Friendly Beasts Cidery. The theater is planned to seat about 70 and to show more films each week, including family matinees and art house titles. Cicada plans to keep its outdoor screenings and its Cicada Underground and New Queer Cinema series. Check cicadacinema.com for opening news and showtimes.
