About Muddy Fork Bakery

Muddy Fork Bakery is owned by bakers Eric Schedler and Katie Zukof, who started baking in 2010 out of their house. They then built a wood-fired oven on land they bought in northern Monroe County, and the first oven was finished by August 2010. The bakery calls itself home to Indiana's only wood-fired brick-oven bakery.

Sourdough and whole-grain breads, croissants, pastries, granolas and flours are the core of the range, and the bakers mill mostly Illinois-grown grains on a stone mill. In 2011 they began selling to Bloomingfoods. The original bakery burned on March 21, 2014, and a larger rebuilt bakery with a new wood-fired oven resumed bread production that September. A solar array installed in June 2020 powers the bakery apart from the oven.

You can order online by midnight Wednesday for Saturday pickup or home delivery. They sell at the Bloomington Community Farmers Market downtown at Showers from April through October, and at the Switchyard Park Pavilion from November through March. Bloomingfoods and local farm stops carry their products, and Bloomington Farm Stop serves their croissants in its cafe.

The bakery at 4595 Earl Young Rd opens on Friday nights from 4 to 7 p.m. for just-baked bread and cheese, and offers baking workshops, though the hours may change. Its Neighbor Loaves program, which supports Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, has passed 15,000 donated loaves.
